Contrary to what your eyes may tell you, this is a book. It has a cover and when the cover is opened, it helps us as a family to retrieve memories. It is a model of a house in a valley in Switzerland, which I have visited repeatedly over the last 50 years. From its windows you can see the most wonderful views of the Swiss mountain scenery. I made this model for my wife, so that she can put her hand inside and wander round the house with her fingers. This helps her to recover memories of holidays we have spent there. She says that when she pokes one of her fingers through a window in the model from inside it helps her remember the view from that window. The base of the box contains a musical box mechanism. When you turn a handle it plays the tune of ‘I have a dream’ from Mamma Mia. My children and their cousins put on a performance of Mamma Mia when we last stayed there and the musical box mechanism evokes that memory.
This more conventional book contains a poem I wrote about the woods that are within walking distance of my home. It is illustrated with relief prints from sketches of the woods and the poem describes a tragic event in the community where I live. The book is like a concertina so that its pages can be pulled out and stood up on a table. That means that the text and images can be viewed as one walks around.
Here is a page from that book.
And here are some of the prints from linocuts that illustrate the book.
